CV

Profile

A community development consultant and manager with a background in participative development, institutional capacity building and training. As a member of a close knit international team (9 nationalities from 4 continents) I lived with my family as members of a poor community in Indonesia which has developed an understanding of other cultures only possible through long exposure. Further experience working within and offering support to organisations in a variety of religious contexts has given insight into faith motivations and the place of faith-based organizations in their respective communities, both in the UK and overseas.

Personality type ESTP (Myers-Briggs) is sometimes called the ‘Promoter’ and contributes to producing an interactive and participative training style which is engaging and relevant, and a commitment to a problem posing pedagogy means the method of delivery is an integral part of the message.

Professional Experience

Community Development  & Programme Management    During 7 years, establishing a self-sustaining NGO from scratch, I was first engaged in all practical aspects of program planning and implementation, before contributing to training and mentoring of staff in each of these roles

  • Experienced in project design (including finding creative interventions to address community needs), project management and implementation
  • Carried out a participative needs assessment survey, and planning a response in post-tsunami Aceh
  • Production of proposals, and negotiating with and reporting to donors, including Geneva Global & Tear Australia
  • Training as an Outcomes Champion (in the UK) has seen me supporting other organisations as they integrate monitoring and evaluation into their planning processes

Strategic Understanding & Consultancy

Experience at the grass-roots has given a deep level of understanding into how development theory hits the ground, and I have a strong understanding of how easily well-intentioned programmes can have dramatically adverse consequences. I am comfortable taking in information from a variety of sources in order to formulate a big picture understanding—demonstrated through reviews and reports prepared for large International NGOs

  • Review visits on behalf of TEAR Australia
  • Produced a 60 page peer-to-peer review of an Oxfam Cash-for-work program in Aceh (Lamno), and delivered conclusions to a multi-agency working group on CFW programs
  • Reviewed the Peacemakers film materials for Feed the Minds. Subsequently commissioned to put into practice my recommendations
  • Carried out a strategic review of Spurgeons international work, prompting a wholesale reconsideration of Spurgeons involvement overseas

Cross-cultural Experience

Although the bulk of my experience is in Indonesia I have also worked in East Africa and Eastern Europe, and have travelled extensively through India and Pakistan.

Having worked in Muslim contexts in Asia, Christian contexts in Africa and Eastern Europe and within a multi-faith organization in the UK I have broad insight into faith motivations for community development work.

It is impossible to ignore the faith context of any development work overseas, and any projects must take into account how they interface with local religious structures and sensibilities.

Learning & Training

Myers-Briggs ESTP’s are known as ‘Promoters’ are recognized as naturally gifted networkers and make effortless trainers. I have consistently demonstrated these affinities in all manner of settings—from debating in school, through a successful career in sales, TESL, and delivery of training in both English and Indonesian and I have consistently demonstrated a high degree of competence and confidence in public-speaking and training delivery.

  • Taught ESL for 4 years generating operational revenue for our nascent NGO
  • Trained expatriate and national staff  in practical aspects of development
  • Designed Faith Literacy training  for the Olympic Development Authority
  • Trained as Outcomes Champion, by Charities Evaluation Services, as part of their National Outcomes Programme
  • Yorkshire Regional Coordinator for FaithAction, delivering training and organizing events for faith-based organizations

Additional Skills & Experience

Highly IT literate; taught myself how to use the full range of MS Office suite, and developing familiarity with web 2.0 applications

Functional fluency in the Indonesian language
